DOG & EQUINE SKI JOERING: INTRODUCTION & FIRST EXPERIENCE

The image of animals pulling you on skis is the very essence of ski joëring, a discipline with deep and ancient roots.

The history of ski joëring, from means of transport to sport:

The term ski joëring comes from the Norwegian word skikjoring and literally means ski driving. This practice appeared in Scandinavia and Siberia centuries ago, not as a sport but as an essential means of transport in snowy regions, allowing people to travel long distances quickly. The teams were most often made up of reindeer or dogs. It was only at the beginning of the 20th century that ski joëring became a competitive discipline incorporating horses, notably as a demonstration sport at the 1928 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz.

Today, whether practiced with your dog or a trained horse, skijoring is an outdoor sport that demands skill, confidence, and respect for animal welfare.

ServicesPourAnimaux presents both disciplines and the professionals who can introduce you to them safely.

1. Canine skijoring, the legacy of mushing:

Canine skijoring is a direct descendant of sledding, but adapted for a single skier. It's the more accessible of the two sports and can be practiced on cross-country ski trails or snow-covered paths.

_ The concept: The skier is connected to their dog or two dogs by a harness and a towline with a shock absorber. The dog pulls the skier, and communication is done through voice and skis.

_ Dog breeds: Ideal for athletic dogs that love to pull, such as Siberian Huskies, German Shorthaired Pointers, Pointers, and Greysters. The dog must be in excellent health and have good lung capacity.

_ Year-round: This discipline also exists without snow in the form of bikejoring or scooterjoring, using the same pulling method.

2. Equine skijoring, the classic powerhouse:

Even more spectacular and technical, equine skijoring is the traditional competitive version.

_ The concept: The skier is pulled by a horse, usually held by safety reins and guided by a rider or led independently by an expert skier. The horse determines the speed and direction.

_ The power: The sensations of speed are exceptional, sometimes reaching 50 km/h.

_ Supervision: Safety is paramount. Introductory lessons and practice must take place at an approved equestrian center, on specially designed trails to ensure the well-being of the horse and the safety of the skier.

3. Find professional supervision:

Whether it's a canine or equestrian sport, instruction by a professional is essential for the safety and well-being of the animal.

_ Canine professionals: Look for a musher or a dog trainer specializing in sledding sports who will guide you in choosing the harness, teaching commands, and assessing your dog's physical condition.

_ Equestrian professionals: Contact an approved equestrian center that offers skijoring and will provide the specific equipment and a horse suited to your skiing level.

Mushing, book a musher on snow, musher on land

Book a dogsledding tour: Find a professional and responsible musher!

BOOK A DOG SLEDDING TRIP: FIND A PROFESSIONAL AND RESPONSIBLE MUSHER!

The image of sled dogs (Siberian Husky, Malamute, or Samoyed) gliding across snowy expanses is a dream for many, young and old.

Did you know, by the way, that legend has it Santa Claus himself is a seasoned musher, his reindeer being the Arctic equivalent of a competitive team?

To ensure your experience is magical and respectful of the canine team, it's crucial to choose a professional and certified musher.

ServicesPourAnimaux guides you to find an expert who combines passion, safety, and ethics.

1. Mushing: An activity available year-round

Gone are the days when mushing was only accessible in the mountains. To maintain the dogs' fitness and allow everyone to discover the sport, many professional mushers offer land-based activities also known as Dryland Mushing.

_ Cani-karting: The dogs are harnessed to a wheeled cart, allowing for exciting rides on dirt tracks or forest trails.

_ Dog biking and dog scootering: The musher, or you yourself during an introductory session, is pulled by one or two dogs, adding a dose of sport and speed.

These on-land activities are ideal for a first experience and for enjoying the power of the dogs without depending on snow.

2. Key questions to ask before booking a mushing session

When choosing a snow or land musher for a ride, ask these essential questions to verify the ethics of the organization and the professional's commitment:

_ Animal welfare before performance: The musher must be able to guarantee that their sled dogs are in perfect physical condition and that activities are suspended during periods of excessive heat (also for on-land mushing).

_ Training method: Make sure that the dog team is managed using gentle methods based on positive reinforcement (i.e., without coercion or punishment).

_ Animal monitoring: Find out about the origin of the dogs and how retirement for older dogs is ensured.

Most mushers have training as canine behaviorists and canine first aid specialists.

3. Different Mushing Options on Snow and Land

_ Dog Sledding Experience: You are a passenger, comfortably seated and driven by the musher (on snow). Bookings are available in winter in mountain regions.

_ Dog Sledding Initiation: You ride behind the sled on snow or the dog cart on land and learn to take the reins. Bookings are available year-round as soon as the weather is cool.

_ Dog Karting / Dog Mountain Biking / Dog Scootering: Activities on land where dogs pull either a cart (for dog karting), a bicycle (for dog mountain biking), or a scooter (for dog scootering). Bookings are available year-round, except during periods of extreme heat.
